Results of the MERCAZ elections to the World Zionist Congress
The American Zionist Movement has announced the official results of the American elections to the World Zionist Congress.
Congratulations to one and all for helping MERCAZ maintain its strength from the last elections in 2002, securing once again 22% of the vote (nearly 17,000 out of the total of 75,500+ votes cast) and electing again 32 delegates to the 35th World Zionist Congress.
When we add to our 32 delegates the two mandates won by our allies, the Green Zionist Alliance (who have once again signed an agreement to join us at the Congress as part of the MERCAZ Olami delegation) we will be entering the Congress in a virtual tie for second place in terms of the American Zionist delegation. In addition, we do expect to pick up 12-18 additional mandates from MERCAZ chapters running in Zionist elections in other countries around the world and thus should have a larger MERCAZ delegation at the Congress than in years past. Moreover, we will also gain strength from the 15 Masorti Olami/World Council delegates who attend the Congress as a recognized international Jewish organization.
We have stabilized our position. This accomplishment should not be minimized or overlooked. In fact, since a larger percentage of Conservative Jews have multiple Zionist affiliations, we probably could have gained an additional half-dozen mandates had all registered Conservative Jews voted MERCAZ.
The official results of the election will be posted at http://congressofthejewishpeople.com
